I often find that, if I fall in love with an author’s current work then go back and explore their backlist, I’m greatly disappointed – because their backlist was written earlier and so they were a less skilled writer then. Which was another thing to be wary about. However, I wanted to give this series a try because I do love the current series. As someone who is not a big fan of romance heavy stories, the premise was another reason I took a while to pick it up. In that sense, it is a very typical YA fantasy of its time, and the relationship is nothing if not predictable. And yes, this book does feel like a Beauty and the Beast retelling (one of my least favourite properties to be retold), with a girl married to a monster and inevitably discovering he’s not as horrible as he appears and falling in love. It hasn’t aged well, looking for all the world like a pretty typical early 2010s YA fantasy full of forbidden love. The first is that the cover, frankly, inspires no confidence.
